The most anticipated/dreaded horror movie of the year. Platinum Dunes, the producers of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday The 13th remakes, have got rid of Robert Englund, but replaced him with serious acting talent in Jackie Earle Haley. The movie is going for scares over camp, a good move, but the trailer suggested a lack of imagination in the dream sequences. The make-up is likely to prove controversial as the new look Freddy looks a little too much like a real life burns victim.

Mother’s Day

Remake of the 1980 Troma ‘cult classic’, Mother’s Day sees a sadist family return to their childhood home to terrorize the new home owners and their guests. Jamie King and Rebecca De Mornay play the mothers of each family. Director Darren Lynn Bousman brought us Saw II – IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera. He’s more capable than he’s given credit for, so expect this psychological horror-thriller to be pretty entertaining.

Friday The 13th: Part 2

This one’s touch and go. The producers have set a theatrical release for August 13th 2010, even though it hasn’t officially been greenlit yet. If it does happen (and the remake made triple its production budget back in theatres) it’s rumoured to be in 3-D. Derek Mears is expected to reprise his role as Jason, and the writers of the remake are said to be on board. But director Marcus Nispel has little interest in returning and it’s unlikely that actors Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti will come back either. Don’t expect it to take any cues from the original Friday sequels.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Inexplicably, the Resident Evil movie series continues to have a huge following and so it staggers on. What’s the plot this time? – Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her battle with Umbrella, leading survivors to Los Angeles only to find it’s overrun with the undead. Yup, that’s it, no idea of any kind behind this one. The script for Resident Evil: Extinction was also lazy in the extreme, but at least they stuck it in the desert for a change of scenery. Paul W.S. Anderson returns to the director’s chair for the first time since the first movie. Oh it’s in 3-D. Please reboot this series and give it to another filmmaker.

Saw VII

As usual, nothing is known of the plot for Saw VII. What we do know is that there were 8 films planned, but this comes at a shakey time for the Saw series – Saw VI was the best reviewed movie since the first, but made only half the amount of the previous entry. So this could actually be the finale. The writers of Saws IV – VI return, as does David Hackl, director of Saw V. Unfortunately Saw V was easily the worst in the series. This time it’s in 3-D, so expect the traps to get in your face.

Scream 4

Wes Craven’s second movie of the year, and the one return I’m really looking forward to. Kevin Williamson has written the script (his excellent writing powered the first two movies), and this is said to introduce a new younger cast to take us through a fresh trilogy. Key cast members are returning though, including Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. Don’t be surprised if at least one of them gets killed off as they make way for the next gen. There are certainly challenges to making the Scream series scary again, not least Ghostface himself who badly needs a redesign after being ridiculed by Scary Movie.

Imagine a small town version of 28 Days Later. Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell are capable actors, but can the director of Sahara do the best horror movie of 2010 ?

May be Kick Ass the best comedy movie in 2010!

1. A Couple of Dicks (February 26): Now called Cop Out — the title director Kevin Smith settled on to satisfy the establishment, he’s back and he’s brought Bruce Willis and 30 Rock’s Tracy Morgan with him for a buddy-cop comedy about two LAPD vets in pursuit of a pilfered baseball card. A tantalizing scene snapshot of Morgan in a cellphone suit has already been circulated ’round the web.

2. Greenberg (March 12): How does Stiller follow his Tropic Thunder triumph? Perhaps with help from Academy Award-nominated writer Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale). More melancholy than his typical films but potentially Stiller’s most meaningful comedy, Greenberg centers around a cynical-wit-slinging, 40-ish bachelor whose life has come to a crossroads.

3. I Love You, Phillip Morris (March 26): Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor find true love in prison. Ha ha, right. No, seriously, but then not so seriously — that’s the central storyline of a surprising rom-com (if you can even call it that) about a straight cop that turns gay con man and falls in love behind bars.

4. Date Night (April 9): What could possibly go wrong when an unexceptional married couple whose lust has fizzled head out for “date night”? Thankfully, a lot, which along with a grade-A comic cast — Steve Carell and Tina Fey (aka, the married couple), Mark Wahlberg, Kristin Wiig, James Franco — could bring the grade-A laughs.

5. The Three Stooges (TBD): The Farrelly brothers (Dumb & Dumber) have been scheming their Stooge redo since the ’90s and originally slated its release for 2009. Plenty of possibilities have been pitched for the roles of Moe, Larry, and Curly from Sean Penn as Larry to Benicio Del Toro as Moe (he’ll always be Che to me). Fingers crossed the slapstick fest finally knuckle-sandwiches off in 2010.

Comedy Wild Cards: These risky theater gambles could pay off big in laughs or leave audiences wishing for their money back.

Hot Tub Time Machine (March 19): What happens when John Cusack, Rob Corddry, The Office’s cranky warehouse drudge Craig Robinson, and Greek’s Clark Duke hot-tub time travel to 1986? Is it so absurd it’s brilliant, or simply absurd? Either way Robinson’s reputation for deadpan delivery and gut-busting comic timing make it worth a watch.

MacGruber (April 16): Yes, we know it could be another Hot Rod, but then again, this SNL MacGyver spoof sketch stretched into a full-length feature film could reach the hilarious heights of Wayne’s World. Couldn’t it? Well, maybe…

5.Avatar – The Last Airbender
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. In the old days, there was peace between the four nations of the world.
